Chapter 18
There’s an extremely small balcony outside my room. Considering I’ve been placed on the first floor, this is not surprising. My eyes glance upward into the night unable to see any other balconies above, only ones on either side of me. A few littered with people, smoking cigarettes.
It’s evening, and I know that sleep is needed, but I can only think of finding him, and taking a much needed shower, since I can literally smell myself. And, of course, wondering how Sophie’s feeling a whole twenty-four hours after my horribly cruel departure, makes my inside cringe every time I let myself think of her. Does she hate me? How can she not? She’ll never trust me again.
Trying to refocus, I yank out a map of the surrounding towns of Hamburg from my coat pocket. I went through every possible website, looking up the Dirk Hasse’s of the surrounding areas, and managed to find out what the bloody hell city of steps means. It’s a place called Blankenese, where the wealthy supposedly build their summer homes. It’s only ten kilometers from where I sit right now. It’s a small town in the outskirts to the west of Hamburg at the Northern River Bank of the Elbe. Online sites have mentioned how it used to be a poor fishing village, but now it’s apparently one of the top addresses to live in. Cargo ships pass all day through the village using the Elbe.
After finally showering, letting the warmth of the water wash away every inch of dirt and sweat, I make my way to the bed. It’s big, and suddenly it makes me feel small, so I lie in the middle, tuck one pillow between my legs, and then drift off to sleep.
My nerves getting the best of me, I can’t even manage to drink a cup of coffee when I wake. Instead, I begin my journey in a taxi, on the road Elbestrasse, that hopefully will lead me to him. Panic begins to sink in, and I start to wonder if I too need one of those inhaler things I see people use to help them breathe better, since I can barely find air. I start to sound like I’m going into labor, breathing in and breathing out several times. The taxi driver looks back nervously at me, but I shake him off. Sweat forms around my brow as I begin to imagine meeting Dirk. I’ve found several, but only one in the town where my Mum mentioned. Supposedly he lives in a house on Charitas-Bischoff-Treppe, where he might be drinking tea with his family, not even realizing that I am on my way to find him. How will he react upon meeting me? Would meeting me ruin his life, or will he welcome me with open arms? What will I do if he does?
White buildings everywhere nuzzle up to green hills. There seems to be no real streets other than the main one that runs through the town. Classy
